To setup a land based AIS receiver station you need a few things;
- A site that has good visability of the area you want to cover
- An AIS receiver
- A VHF antenna (preferably one tuned to AIS)
- A mounting location for the antenna
- Depending on the receiver type you may need a computer to connect the receiver to
- Internet connection if you are planning to publish or send data
My location has great unobstructed views of the inner Hauraki Gulf.

The antenna I is a Marine AIS Vertical Antenna from DPD Productions.

This antenna is mounted to my roof which is 3 stories high.

The receiver is the Comar SLR 300N.

This receiver is network capable so it can be configured to send the data directly to MarineTraffic without the need for the receiver to be connected to a PC.
